What is work-life balance?

Work-life balance is a term used to emphasise the importance of having time and energy for both your work and your personal life, aka working hard, playing hard. This balance is a crucial part of employee well-being and something we really care about here at Workbench.

Research has demonstrated that failing to maintain this balance can have an extremely negative impact on workers’ mental health.

What does working from home have to do with it?

An important factor of work-life balance is the ability to stop working and keep your workplace separate from your personal life.

Working from home has made the ability to detach from your job and create boundaries more difficult. Whilst being able to work remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic had its benefits, it can be extremely damaging towards this necessary balance.

3 in 10 have found it hard to separate their home lives from their work lives. (https://jobdescription-library.com/remote-working-statistics-uk#negative-effects)

Due to the nature of remote work, meaning you aren’t observed, many employees feel they need to prove to their managers that they are working hard which then results in unpaid overtime and an even bigger imbalance between your work and home life.

The importance of having an office

Your office provides a clear place of work, which workers can physically leave and detach from at the end of their working day. This allows you and your employees to mentally switch off from work, preventing them from experiencing burnout and stress.

Going into the office has also been proven to have a positive impact on work relationships, as in-person spaces provide a location for employees to connect and exchange ideas and experiences. Whereas, it has been recorded that remote work made 67% of workers feel less connected to their colleagues. (https://jobdescription-library.com/remote-working-statistics-uk#negative-effects)
